The R438 is an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) for Leroy Somer brushless generators, compatible with AREP or PMG excitation systems. It accepts a 3-phase power input of 40–50V AC, with voltage sensing available at three selectable ranges: 95–140V (50/60 Hz), 170–260V (50/60 Hz), or 340–520V (50/60 Hz).
The R438 delivers a maximum output of 160V DC at 120V AC input, with a maximum current of 8A. Minimum field resistance is 15 ohms. Voltage regulation accuracy is ±0.5%. Short circuit capability is 3× rated current for 10 seconds (with AREP or PMG excitation). Rated overload current is 8A for 10 seconds.
Response time is 1 second (normal) or 0.3 seconds (rapid) for a ±20% voltage variation. Remote voltage adjustment range is ±5%. Internal fuse protection (F1 on X1, X2) is rated at 8A slow-blow, 250V. Operating temperature range is -40°C to +70°C.
